- HOMILIES ON FIRST EPISTLE TO TIMOTHY.
- ARGUMENT.
- HOMILY I.--1 Timothy
1:1, 2. "Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour,
and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; unto Timothy, my own son in the
faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our
Lord."
- HOMILY II.--1 Timothy
1:5-7. "Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and
of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved
have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law;
understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm."
- HOMILY III.--1 Timothy
1:12-14. "And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that
he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; who was before a
blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because
I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding
abundant, with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus."
- HOMILY IV.--1 Timothy
1:15, 16. "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit
for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show
forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe
on Him to life everlasting."
- HOMILY V.--1 Timothy
1:18, 19. "This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the
prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good
warfare; holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away
have made shipwreck concerning the faith."
- HOMILY VI.--1 Timothy
2:1-4. "I exhort therefore that, first of all, supplications, prayers,
intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men; for kings, and for
all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in
all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of
God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the
knowledge of the truth."
- HOMILY VII.--1 Timothy
2:2-4. "That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and
honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
who willeth that all men should be saved, and come unto the knowledge of
the truth."
- HOMILY VIII.--1 Timothy
2:8-10. "I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands,
without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves
in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broidered hair,
or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing
godliness) with good works."
- HOMILY IX.--1 Timothy
2:11-15. "Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer
not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman
being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved
in child-bearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with
sobriety."
- HOMILY X.--1 Timothy
3:1-4. "If a man desire the office of a Bishop, he desireth a good work.
A Bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober,
of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine,
no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with
all gravity."
- HOMILY XI.--1 Timothy
3:8-10. "Likewise must the Deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given
much to wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith
in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved: then let them use
the office of a Deacon, being found blameless."
- HOMILY XII.--1 Timothy
4:1-3. "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some
shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines
of demons; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with
a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which
God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and
know the truth."
- HOMILY XIII.--1 Timothy
4:11-14. "These things command and teach. Let no man despise thy youth; but
be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity,
in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attendance to reading,
to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which
was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the
presbytery."
- HOMILY XIV.--1 Timothy
5:8. "But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his
own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."
- HOMILY XV.--1 Timothy
5:11-15. "But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax
wanton against Christ, they will marry; having condemnation, because they
have cast off their first faith. And withal they learn to be idle, wandering
about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies,
speaking things which they ought not. I will therefore that the younger widows
marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary
to speak reproachfully. For some are already turned aside after Satan."
- HOMILY XVI.--1 Timothy
5:21-23. "I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect
angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another,
doing nothing by partiality. Lay hands hastily on no man, neither be partaker
of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. Drink no longer water, but use a
little wine for thy stomach's sake and three often infirmities."
- HOMILY XVII.--1 Timothy
6:2-7. "These things teach and exhort. If any man teach otherwise, and consent
not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the
doctrine which is according to godliness; he is proud, knowing nothing, but
doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife,
railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and
destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw
thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing
into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out."
- HOMILY XVIII.--1 Timothy
6:13-16. "I give thee charge in the sight of God, Who quickeneth all things,
and before Christ Jesus, Who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing
of our Lord Jesus Christ: which in his times He shall show, Who is the blessed
and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath
immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; Whom no
man hath seen, nor can see; to Whom be honor and power everlasting. Amen."
- SECOND EPISTLE TO TIMOTHY
- HOMILY I.--2 Timothy
1:1, 2. "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to
the promise of life which is in Jesus Christ, to Timothy, my dearly beloved
son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our
Lord."
- HOMILY II.--2 Timothy
1:8-10. "Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor
of me His prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the Gospel
according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy
calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and
grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began; but is
now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ."
- HOMILY III.--2 Timothy
1:13-18. "Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me,
in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed
unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost Which dwelleth in us. This thou knowest,
that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus
and Hermogenes. The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he
oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: but, when he was in Rome,
he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that
he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered
unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well."
- HOMILY IV.--2 Timothy
2:1-7. "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ
Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the
same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. no man
that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may
please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. And if a man also strive
for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. The husbandman
that laboreth must be first partaker of the fruits. Consider what I say;
and the Lord give thee understanding in all things."
- HOMILY V.--2 Timothy
2:11-14. "It is a faithful saying: for if we be dead with Him, we shall also
live with Him: if we suffer, we shall also reign with Him: if we deny Him,
He also will deny us: if we believe not, yet He abideth faithful: He cannot
deny Himself. Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before
the Lord, that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting
of the hearers."
- HOMILY VI.--2 Timothy
2:20, 21. "But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of
silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor, and some to dishonor.
If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor,
sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good
work."
- HOMILY VII.--2 Timothy
3:1-7. "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural
affection, truce-breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers
of those that are good, Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasure
more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power
thereof; from such turn away. For of this sort are they, which creep into
houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers
lusts and pleasures, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge
of the truth."
- HOMILY VIII.--2 Timothy
3:1-4. "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural
affection, truce-breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers
of those that are good, Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures
more than lovers of God."
- HOMILY IX.--2 Timothy
3:16, 17. "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good
works."
- HOMILY X.--2 Timothy
4:9-13. "Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: For Demas hath forsaken
me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens
to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring
him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. And Tychicus
have I sent to Ephesus. The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when
thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the
parchments."
- EPISTLE TO TITUS
- HOMILY I.--Titus 1:1-4. "Paul,
a servant of God, and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith
of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the
world began; But hath in due times manifested His word through preaching,
which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
To Titus, mine own son after the common faith; Grace, mercy, and peace, from
God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour."
- HOMILY II.--Titus 1:5, 6.
"For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the
things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city as I had appointed
thee: If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children,
not accused of riot, or unruly."
- HOMILY III.--Titus 1:12-14.
"One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always
liars, evil beasts, flow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke
them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; Not giving heed to Jewish
fables, and commandments of men, that turn born the truth."
- HOMILY IV.--Titus 2:2-5.
"That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity,
in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh
holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands,
to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient
to their own husbands, that the word of God he not blasphemed."
- HOMILY V.--Titus 2:11-14.
"For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared unto all men,
Teaching them that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live
soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that
blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour
Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity,
and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works."
- HOMILY VI.--Titus 3:8-11.
"These things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed
in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and
profitable unto men. But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and
contentions, and strivings about the law, for they are unprofitable and vain.
A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject. Knowing
that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of
himself."
- EPISTLE TO PHILEMON
- ARGUMENT
- HOMILY I.--Philemon 1-3.
"Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon
our dearly beloved, and fellow-laborer, And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus
our fellow-soldier, and to the Church in thy house: Grace to you, and peace,
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."
- HOMILY II.--Philemon
4-6. "I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers, Hearing
of thy love and faith, which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and toward
all saints. That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the
acknowledging [in the knowledge] of every good thing which is in us,[1] in
Christ Jesus."
- HOMILY III.--Philemon
17-19. "If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. If he
hath wronged thee at all, or oweth thee aught, put that to mine account;
I Paul write it with mine own hand, I will repay it: that I say not to thee
how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides."
