THE TEN COMMANDMENTS RE\INSTATED IN THE N.T. # 1. Body: A. One of the basic principles necessary to a proper understanding of the Bible is the fact that the: 1. O.T. ; Old Covenant ; Law of Moses 2. Including the TEN COMMANDMENTS ,are no longer binding upon man today. B. Scripture has clearly shown that this is a true statement. 1. Gal. 3:23-25 ..."But now faith hath come we are.." 2. Gal. 4:4-5 ..."Christ sent to redeem those under" 3. Col. 2:14 .."He has taken it away and nailed it" 4. Rom. 7:4 .."You where made to die to the law.." C. These Scriptures clearly show that the Old Testament has been done away with and that we are now under a different law and a different teacher. D. To show that scripture has included the taking away of the Ten commandments these proof texts are used. 1. II Cor. 3:6-11. a) The ten commandments are the commands that are written upon the "tablets of stone". 1) Exodus 34:18 : Deut. 4:13 : 10:4. b) The commandments of Exodus 20 and Deut. 5 are the commands which are spoken of in II Cor. 3:6-11. E. One can clearly see why it is forbidden to turn to the Old Testament as our authority in this day and time. 1. Gal. 5:1-4 : Col. 2:16-17. F. Rather the Christian is to be governed and guided by the New Testament which has supplanted the Old Testament...Heb. 9:14-17. G. This raises two very important questions: 1. Is the Old Testament without value to us today? a) Answer NO! cf Romans 15:4 ; I Cor. 10:11. 2. Are the principles set forth in the Ten commandments no longer binding? a) It is the aim of this study to show , the basic principles found in the Ten Commandments are also to be found in the N.T. with the exception of ONE: --- The Keeping of the Sabbath. H. It is my intention to study and examine these basic principles that God has set forth for mankind. 1. A study and application will make the earth a Better Place to Live in , The church a LIVING FORCE FOR GOOD , and the HOPE OF HEAVEN A REALITY. I. Let us now read the Ten Commandments...Found in Exodus 20:1-17 and the identical list found in Deut. 5. 1. These are the only two places where these commands are placed in list form in the Bible. Body: I. "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." ...Ex. 20:3 A. God has recognized the existence and the tendencies of men to create other gods...I Cor. 8:5-6. 1. One of the reasons being is that there is no way possible to prove there is a God by any of our Five Senses. 2. It is therefore that men tend to create gods that they can SEE ; Touch ..ect. a) Yet the point is still the fact that there is ONLY ONE TRUE AND LIVING GOD....I Cor. 8:6. b) This is regardless of what dispensation of time one lived. or lives in...Here is the eternal Truth of the Matter..."There is But ONE GOD!" cf.. .Eph 4:6. B. In the New Testament God still demands that men worship HIM and Him alone...Acts 14:8-18 ; John 4:20-24. 1. One can see from the scriptures that a) The Worship of ANGELS is forbidden..Col 2:18 ; Rev 19:10 ; Rev 22:8-9. b) The worship of Men is forbidden.. Acts 10:25-26. 1) This goes with out saying that "preachers are to be respected, but not worshipped." c) The worship of Creatures are forbidden... Rom 1:22-25. C. The command "Thou shalt not have other gods before me" is implied by such verses as has been used above. Thus it can be determined that this first principle is indeed in the N.T. II. "Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image." A. It needs be said that there are TWO types of Idols that are forbidden here, as well as TWO things that are forbidden of men. 1. Man is not to make any graven image. 2. Man is not to bow down to any graven image. B. The two types of idols that are forbidden : 1. Idols made for man-made gods....Dan. 3:1. a) Made of Gold, it was 90 feet high and 9 feet thick 2. Idols to honor the true and living God..Ex. 32:1-5. a) It can thus be stated that it is wrong from such contextual study to have any resemblance of God in our HOMES or HOUSES OF WORSHIP...Isa. 40:18-20. C. Idolatry is forbidden in the N.T. 1. Acts 17:24-31 ; I John 5:21 ; I Cor. 10:14 . 2. It is a work of the flesh and will led to everlasting destruction...Gal 5:19-20. D. The same reasons exists today that existed in the Old Testament as to why we should refrain from worshipping idols. 1. God is a Jealous God...Ex. 20:5 ; II Cor. 11:2. 2. The folly of Idols....Isa. 44:14-20 ; I Cor. 12:2. 3. Because of what is involved with idolatry.... I Peter 4:3 ; Ex. 32:6. 4. God's punishment is the same today as was back then...nations fell and souls will be lost in Hell...I Cor. 10:5-7 ; Rev. 21:8. 5. We need to be aware that Scriptures say that anything we worship that demands our time and attention other than The ONE TRUE GOD is considered idolatry...I John 5:21 ; Col. 3:5. Conclusion: A. The Christian needs to realize that even though we are not governed or restricted by the O.T.Laws we are bound to abide in the teachings and Doctrine Of Christ. 1. With this in mind the Christian needs to learn that although we refuse to reach back into the O.T. for scriptural authority, the principles of the Ten Commandments are re-instated in the N.T. except the fourth command.."Thou shalt keep the sabbath day Holy." B. If you are here this morning and wish to make your life right with Christ then you need to look into the N.T. to see what is demanded from us. 1. Hear the word....Rom 10:17. 2. Believe the Word. 3. Repent .....II Peter 3:9 (c) 4. Confess .... Romans 10:8-9 5. Baptized ....Acts 2:38 , Acts 22:16 , Mk 16:16 C If you are here and are subject to the invitation then pleases make it known while we stand and sing. The Ten Commandments re-instated in the N.T. # 2 Intro: A. Let us be reminded that the 10 Commandments along with the rest of the O.C. has been done away.... II Cor. 3:11,14 ; Col. 2:14 ; Rom. 7:4. 1. Our study has been to see if these principles occur in the N.T. which is our authority today. a) We practice these today because they are in the N.T. all except the Command "Thou shalt keep the Sabbath Day." B. Let us now continue the study of the Ten Commandments re-instated in the N.T. Body: I."Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in Vain"....Ex. 20:7. A. This has primarily to do with swearing by God, which was permitted...Deut. 6:13. 1. However false swearing was expressly forbidden...Lev. 19:21. 2. Thus to say .."I swear by God, that this is so" and it be a lie, would be taking God's name in Vain. B. It is to be noted that such type of swearing is forbidden in the N.T.....Matt. 5:34 ; James 5:12. C. This has also to do with , profaning the name of God. 1. This was expressly forbidden....Lev. 24:10-16 ,23. 2. The name of God, as God Himself is to be Reverenced...Matt. 6:9 D. In the N.T. it is still wrong to take God's name in vain. This is an ageless principle that we as Christians need to adhere to. 1. Our lips are to make confession (praise) to His name...Heb. 13:15. 2. IF we call for God as a witness to our testimony, it had better be true...Gal. 1:20. a) It is bad enough to lie to men, let alone the consequences of lying to God...Acts 5:4-5 ; Eccl. 5:2. 3. By disobeying God and His word , we as children of God who have taken on His name ..."take His name in Vain." 4. When I take any of God's designations (Jehovah , Lord, God, Almighty) and use them in a PROFANE --- not in a sacred way --- I am guilty of corrupt, profane speech and of taking God's name in vain. a) This is often a problem when we get mad, or get hurt...God....... b) When we get surprised..."good Lord!" c) Many do not think of taking God's name in vain when they toss the words ..."Hallelujah" as a common expression. This means "Praise Jehovah". d) This brings us to the use of substitutes. We don't want to use the Lord's name in vain but we get so close..."Lawdy Me ---in place of Good Lord" 1) Good Gosh --- in place of Good God. 2) Golly ---- in place of God. e) The point here is that Jesus rebuked the Jews for substitute swearing... Matt. 5:34-37... what is the difference with substitute profanity. E. Let us watch our lips..... Eph 4:29 ; Heb. 13:5. 1. Anything that we say that does not give God the praise is of Satan and his world. 2. We will give an account of every idol word... Matt. 12:36-37. II. "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it Holy...Ex. 20:8-11 A. This as I have said before is the only one of the Ten Commandments that does not reoccur as a binding law in the N.T. 1. However, even thought this law is not found in the N.T. it will do us well to study why NOT! B. The purpose of the Sabbath proves it is not an "Eternal Law" as the Adventist claim. 1. Though God Rested on the 7th Day there is no command to observe it before ...Ex 16: 22-26. a) This was given in connection with the Manna. 2. The very name "Sabbath" means...."Cessation, desist from activity." C. This law was given to Israel alone as a sign of God's Love and concern for them...Ezek. 20:10-12 ; Deut. 5:15 1. This was to be a sign Between God and Israel forever...Ex. 31:16-17 --"Through their Generations" a) This meaning: That as long as God recognized the Israelites as His people the Sabbath would be in effect. b) We can see that in the Christian dispensation God now only recognizes those who are Christians ...Gal. 6:16 ; Phil. 3:2 ; Rom. 2:28-29 ; Gal. 3:29 ; 3:9. D. A study of the N.T. reveals that indeed the Sabbath is no longer Binding...Col. 2:14-17 1. Paul has been used as a crutch to try and prove that Sabbath Day observrence is in the N.T. a) A close examination of the text...Acts 13:14-15 , 38-39 shows the reader that Paul used this as an opportunity to teach and preach the gospel of Christ. b) The Jews assembled on the Sabbath and what better place would it be than to go to a place of worship to teach the Will of God. 2. The N.T. is as silent on observing the Sabbath as it is on burning of incense and that of animal sacrifices. E. Upon closer examination of the N.T. one can see that the First Day is given Preeminence. 1. First day Christ Arose...Mk. 16:9 2. The day that Christ's church was established... Lev. 23:11-15 ; Acts 2:1, 47. 3. The day set aside for the observrence of the Lord's Supper...Acts 20:7 4. The day the saints where to lay by instore... I Cor. 16:1-2. 5. In an very real sense it is the Lord's Day... Rev. 1:10. a) Contemporary Historians have recognized the first day as Being the Lord's Day and there is no reason for us not to. F. While the same sort of restrictions concerning the Sabbath are not repeated, spirituality demands a certain type of reverence for this day. 1. Saints are forbidden to forsake the assembling of our selves together on this day...Heb. 10:25 ; I Cor. 11:33. a) As best that is possible with us we are to not let our work, rest, pleasures and play interfere with our worshipping with God. 2. The Sabbath is gone forever but there is still a God to be praised and worshipped and we had better make time in our busy schedule to serve Him. Concl: A. The Christian looks into the New Testament to find the authority for what he believes and teaches, not because he does not believe the O.T. or that he does not think that it has nothing of worth but simply because God has brought in a New Will by His Son Jesus Christ. B. This study concludes the Third and Fourth Commandments and we have broadened our insight into the true knowledge of the Lord. C. The opportunity is given to any here this evening to summit to the Will of God in complete and trusting obedience to His will. D. Will you come, Believing, Repenting, Confessing and being Baptized for the remission of your sins, while together we stand and sing. TEN COMMANDMENTS RE-INSTATED IN THE N.T. # 3 Intro: A. Once again we want to continue to study the Ten commandments re-instated in the N.T. B. This has been one of the leading attacks against the "church of Christ" -- however as we have seen so far the first four commands are re-instated in the N.T. and therefore we as Christians do uphold the principles of the Ten Commandments --all except keep the Sabbath Day Holy. C. Let us continue now with the fifth and sixth commandments of Ex. 20. Body: I. "Honor thy Father and Mother" Ex. 20:12. A. God demanded severe punishment to the person who cursed father or mother, Ex. 21:15-17 B. The first of 5th commands with a promise attached - - two-fold: Deut. 5:16; long life, go well. 1. Individually- for one thing escape stoning and result - long life, plus a extra blessing from God for a good and long life. 2. Nationally- for the nation's well-being, it must obey God in this matter. DEUT. 6:1-3 C. Most assuredly, this command is to be found in the N.T....Eph 6:1-3 what must we do to obey this command? 1. Honor by our lips --- praise not curse or revile...Eph 4:29 ; I Cor. 6:10. a) The disrespectful person was to be stoned under the O.C. and if no repentance one can lose his soul today...I Cor. 6:10. b) Is not sassing one step away from cursing parents? It is indeed a lack of respect. One needs be reminded that a good whipping is far from the act of stoning in the old days. c) Parents should train their children to speak properly of and to them...Prov. 22:6. 1) If they wait to start to long, it will be just about hopeless. 2. Honor by our Obedience --- Eph 6:1,2 ; Col 3:20 a) It is possible to honor with our lips yet fail in our obedience...just as the Jews towards God...Matt 15:9 ; Matt. 21:28-30. b) A sobering thought that we as parents need to bare in mind is the fact that somewhere down the line, a child becomes eternally accountable for disobedience...Rom. 1:30-32 ; II Tim. 3:2. c) Again it behooves parents to train their children to obey, for their -- child and parents -- soul's sake. 1) The lessons that children learn in the home are the lessons that they continue in through out the rest of their lives...if they learn OBEDIENCE TO AUTHORITY they will live in accord with the laws of God and of the Land. 3. We honor our parents by our substance. a) The word "honor" is often used to mean to support financially...I Tim. 5:3, 4, 17 ,18. b) This is good and acceptable to God, and Jesus condemned the Jews for trying to get out of their responsibilities...Matt. 15:5-6. 1) The neglect of the parents and elderly is one of the major ills of our society. c) Parents are due our honor all the days of their lives. D. A promise is repeated in the N.T....Eph 6:3 1. Be Well with thee -- obedience to God and to parents brings about the good life: family peace, happiness, prosperity, where as rebellion only brings about misery...I Peter 3:10-12 a) The consequent blessings therefrom and the extra blessings from God are both true in honoring thy parents. 2. Live long. a) This may be a direct promise from God. b) By a life of obedience we avoid the circumstances and situations that endanger our eternal life and physical life. 1) When parents warn of certain locations or companions and we fail to heed their warnings it can lead to a short and miserable life. 2) Don't drink , smoke , steal , take drugs , commit adultery are certainly warnings that we should all heed. II. "THOU SHALT NOT KILL" ....Exodus 20:13. A. This was not the first time that murder was considered against the will of God. 1. When Cain killed Abel, he incurred God's displeasure...Gen. 4:11-14. 2. After the flood, God reiterated to Noah the sanctity of human life...Gen. 9:6. B. Many think that the Bible contradicts itself and that God is inconsistent on this matter...Ex. 20:13 vrs Deut. 25:17-19. 1. I do not purpose to have all the answers on this matter but one thing I do know that the Bible does not contradict itself nor is God inconsistent on any matter. 2. One conclusion that we must believe is that God made a distinction between killing in battle and premeditated murder. a) It was often that Jehovah himself that commanded Israel into war. b) God through out of history used nation against nation to punish the ungodly...Gen. 15:16 ; Ex 23:22-23 ; II Kings 10:32-33. 1) Consider Israel itself....Babylon, Assyria , Rome. c) The fact remains that they became an instrument of God's wrath in no way gave one the right to commit murder... 1)Consider David; God approved his armies fighting ammonites, but God did not approve David's conspiracy of murder of Uriah...II Sam. 12:9. 2) David did not approve of the death of Abner... II Sam. 3:31-37 ... note his actions... II Sam 4:11-12 3. Although God has made a distinction between premeditated murder and that of killing in the field is not to be argued but the Christian needs to look into the N.T. to see what the New law has brought into effect. C. The New Testament condemns murder also. 1. The apostles and prophets condemned the murders of Jesus...Acts 2:23 ; 7:52. 2. Murdering is against God's law...I Tim. 1:9,10. 3. It is listed as a work of the flesh...Gal 5:21. 4. The N.T. goes a step further than just murder but goes to the motives behind murder and condemns them also. a) AN EVIL HEART.....Mark 7:21-22 b) HATRED is equal to murder....I John 3:15 c) Not to be ANGRY without a cause...Matt. 5:21-22. 5. It is thus that the child of God is taught to Love even our enemies...Matt 5:44, Rom 12:20-21. a) That revenge is not permitted...Rom 12:17 ,19. 6. This is not to say that CAPITAL PUNISHMENT is to be done away with. a) God still permits the governments of the land the right to take the life of certain evil doers...Rom. 13:4. D. Whether this proves that Christians can participate in war or not participate in war is a question that has seen difficulty in settling. 1. I could state my personal opinion on the matter but that is not what I am here for nor is my personal opinion without flaws, so for a few minutes I want to look at the two sides of the coin and leave the decision up to each and everyone. a) Proponents of both sides can produce passages that seem to promote their view ...Luke 3:12-14 vrs Matt. 5:44. 2. I still know and believe that there is no contradiction in scripture but rather a lack of understanding them. a) I also believe that this is possibly one of those difficult matters ...II Peter 3:16 and we need to have patience with each and every one. 3. There are a few reasons that I would not personally engage in active fighting combat: a) The time has come to lay down our weapons of war...Isa. 2:2-4. b) Christ spoke concerning the matter of the sword...Matt. 26:50-52. c) Christians have different incentives...Matt. 10:16 d) Matt. 10:23 ...When they persecute you in this city flee ( Note don't fight for your rights but flee.) e) The Christians weapons are not carnal... II Cor. 10:3-4 ; Eph 6:10-18. 4. Then there is the matter of the Spirit of War verses the Spirit of Christ. a) Justice vrs Mercy...Matt 5:7. b) Curse enemy vrs Bless enemy...Rom 12:14 c) Render evil for evil vrs Render good for evil...Rom 12:21. d) Hatred vrs Love ...Matt. 5:44 e) Vengeance vrs Avenge not...Rom 12:19 f) Work of the flesh vrs the work of the Spirit... Gal 5:19-23 g) Putting country first vrs putting the kingdom first...Matt 6:33. 5. As I have said before it is something for each individual to decide, I can't decide for you but these are some things that the Child of God needs to think upon and consider before engaging into violent combat. E. Ultimately the murderer will lose his soul... I John 3:15. F. Let us watch carefully our hearts lest hate enters in, or that we consider murder so great and lying not so great. Both are transgressions of God's law and will be judged accordingly...Rev 21:8. Concl: A. Whatever our decision is we need to realize that we cannot condemn those who differ from us. B. These two commandments are both found re-instated in the N.T. and that is the reason that the Christian upholds the standards that we do. C. If you are here tonight and have not obeyed the Gospel of Christ then you need to do what is commanded in the N.T.... H + B + R + C + B = Sal. D. Why not come tonight while we stand and sing. TEN COMMANDMENTS RE-INSTATED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT #4 Intro: A. Once again we are committed to the study of the Ten Commandments that are re-instated in the N.T. B. The reason for such a study is to have the comfort, the hope, and the knowledge that is mentioned in...Rom 15:4 ; I Cor. 10:11. C. It is also a very valuable study in the fact that it enables the Christian to see that the Ten Commandments, all except THOU Shalt Keep The Sabbath Day Holy, are good principles that are laid out by God for mankinds relationship with God Himself and with one another. D. It needs also be noted that because of the abundance of material on this subject it is impossible that I Go into complex detail. as it is this study will take one week longer than I had previously planned. E. Therefore with this in mind let us now continue our study of The seventh and eighth commandments of Exodus 20:14-15. Body: I. "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY" vrs 14. A. I am opposed to the sex education that is being taught in the schools as they are taught concerning sex, not the right and wrongs of it, but rather it is taught in such a way that it arouses the passions and lusts of those who have no scriptural right to engage in such actions. 1. It is therefore not my intention to engage in this subject on the basis of what it is but rather I believe that , What constitutes adultery should be explained to our young people by their parents in the home, and not in a mixed audience such as this. 2. Rather it is my intention to look into the scriptures and see what God has said concerning the subject of adultery. B. Firstly one needs to understand concerning this subject that under the Old Covenant this sin was punishable by death...Lev. 20:10. 1. It is to be noted that the putting away of one's spouse for some uncleanness found in Deut. 24:1 did not include fornication, as this was punishable by death. C. God's original plan was for the sexual passion and desire to be satisfied in the marriage relationship between a man and woman...Matt. 19:4-6 ; I Cor. 7:1- 5....and not outside of this relationship. D. It can be clearly seen that God's arrangement still holds true today as it is still demanded by the N.T. 1. Marriage is honorable and sexual activity outside of this relationship is condemned...Heb. 13:4 ; Gal. 5:19 ; Prov. 6:32. 2. One needs to realize in this perverse society that we live in that the only honorable relationship that is seen as favorable in the sight of God is the marriage between a man and a woman who have the right to marriage...I Cor. 6:9-10 ; Rom. 1:26-27 ...all others are to be seen as forbidden and sin in God's sight. E. Adultery can be committed in the following ways: 1. By entering into a marriage after an unlawful divorce. a) It is to be noted that divorce was not meant to be from the foundation of the home...Matt. 19:4-6 b) However there are only two exceptions to the marriage for life. 1) The death of the spouse...Romans 7:2 2) The act of adultery...Matt.19:9 (a); Matt 5:32. 2. By Committing fornication while married or while unmarried....Heb. 13:4 ; I Cor. 6:15-18. 3. By having lust in one's heart.....Matt. 5:28 ; II Peter 2:14. a) The only way not to fall into this situation is to avoid such situations that lead to this sin. 1) Dancing .....this is licentiousness..Gal 5:19. 2) Certain movies, and magazines --- pornography comes from the greek word ---"PORNEIA" which means fornication. 3) Also places of ill repute. b) It also requires that one have chaste behavior that does not cause another to stumble. 1) Matt. 18:7 ; I Peter 3:2 ; II Tim. 2:9-10 this applies to both men and women. 2) Our behavior should be chaste in speech, clothing, and in our actions. F. One needs to also realize that we are able to commit Spiritual adultery. 1. As a wife owes allegiance to her husband so we owe allegiance to none other than Jesus Christ... II Cor. 11:2. a) The Jewish people are often referred to as playing the Harlot with God, when they forsook God's ways and went after foreign gods of the surrounding nations. 2. One needs to see that this physical and the spiritual adultery comes from the love of the things that are in the world....I John 2:15-17. G. The Christian, the child of God is to abstain/hate all that is evil ...Rom 12:9 (b) ; I Thess. 5:22 and cling to that which is good...Rom. 12:9 (c) ; I Thess. 5:21. 1. So let us abstain from all forms of adultery - in act , in thought , and in spirit. II. "THOU SHALT NOT STEAL" A. The important message to see here is the fact that this commandment once again deals with mans relationship with fellow man. 1. The golden rule states that "You should do unto others as you want them to do to you." and Certainly this is a scriptural principle... Matt. 22:39. 2. Stealing is to take something that belongs to another against his will. Webster defines steal as such..."To take another person's property; to move in a sly way; or to move secretly". B. Even if one stole for apparent necessity, one still needs to realize that this is condemned also by scripture...Prov. 6:30-31. 1. Restitution had to be made by those who were found to have stolen...Exodus 22:1-4. C. Under the N.T. for one to provide for his needs and others needs, work is demanded and stealing is condemned...Eph 4:28. 1. Although robbing from the rich and giving to the poor makes for interesting stories, it needs to be seen that it clearly is in violation of the N.T. principle. 2. In a society where the Government has stepped in and helped so many people with welfare, that if one is able and has the opportunity to work, but refuse to do so and receives money...I believe that they are stealing in doing such! D. Let us look at some various ways in which we could be found guilty of stealing. 1. By armed robbery. 2. By burglary -- breaking and entering. a) Account The burglary of two who had their car stolen one night, found it the next day with a pair of tickets to a well know theater production with a note of apology. They accepted the tickets went out came home to find that their home was stripped from top to bottom. 3. Shoplifting - one of the major reasons for such high prices in stores today. It is also the most prevalent crime today. 4. Taking of materials from work without permission -- it is said that those who work for automobile companies carry enough supplies home to build and entire car. 5. We steal when we falsify records --- expense reports, stealing from the tax man on our income tax. 6. By-passing company policies to gain services. a) Eg. by calling collect and having a pre-arranged message...ie..John Doe means all is well and we are safe...ect. 7. By going into debt and not paying --- Illust. of the problem we had with members of the church who came down from Rhodesia. a) This amounts to more than just stealing, it amounts to breaking a promise as well. 8. We can steal a person -- or kidnap a person. a) Under the O.C. this brought about the death penalty...Deut. 24:7. b) Brings about punishment under the N.T. ... I Tim. 1:10. E. One of the gravest of crimes of stealing is stealing from God. 1. One might say that is an impossibility... Mal. 3:8 (a). a) If Israel could rob God of Tithes, is it not possible that we too can rob God in our prosperity. b) If our giving is not with liberality, and proportionate to our earning we are guilty of robbing God. c) If we give grudgingly, or not as we purpose we rob God. 2. If Israel could rob God of offerings and sacrifices - can't we rob God of Worship? a) By forsaking the assembly we are robbing God of time that is His, and worship that is due Him. b) Failing to offer praise unto God is robbery... Heb. 13:15. c) When we get entangled in the affairs of this life we are robbing ourselves of the great reward. d) When God had blessed us with certain talents and we do not use them properly we rob God. e) When we receive the Gospel but refuse to share it we rob others of the hope of eternal life, thus we rob God of one more child of God. F. We can Rob a man's soul. 1. By our example we can lead them away from God...Matt. 18:7 2. By not teaching sound doctrine...Matt. 23:13. 3. With this in mind we can rob one of the prize/reward of the soul...Col. 2:8 ;18. Concl: A. Brethren we need to see and realize that there is a lot more to the ten commandments than just "Thou shalt not.." 1. We need to learn the consequences of breaking them, and we need to see the hurt and destruction that is brought about by not complying to them. B. We as Christians are bound under the principles that are set forth in the Ten Commandments and it is our duty toward God and toward fellow man to walk therein. C. This being the final lesson in this study, we have come to see that the Ten Commandments of the O.T. are indeed implied, if not verbally stated in the N.T. in basic Christian behavior. B. We have also noted the importance of such a study in the fact that Members of the church of Christ are accused of not believing in the O.T. 1. Scriptures such as Rom. 15:4 ; I Cor. 10:11.show us the importance of such a study. C. Also such a study has been beneficial in the aspect of teaching and instructing us in understanding why we believe in the principles laid out in the Ten Commandments, as well as to ensure that we will " always be ready to give an answer to everyone that asks you a reason of the faith/hope that is in you" I Peter 3:15. D. To date we have studied all but two of the ten commandments and I wish this evening to conclude such a study by studying the last two commandments found in Exodus 20; Deut. 5 Body: I. "THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS" VRS 16. A. The law demanded more than one witness and in the case of capital offenses the witnesses where to cast the first stone...Deut. 17:6,7. 1. If not then we are false witnesses of Christ. D. Here are a few examples of faithful witnesses of Christ. 1. Antipas, was a faithful witness, didn't change his testimony even when faced with death...Rev. 2:13. 2. Many times we do not speak up for Christ, a mistake we so often make each and every day.. a. Covert --- from greek word (EPITHUMEO), meaning to fix the desire upon, whether good or bad, hence to long after, to lust after, to covet. (Vine's pg. 252) 1. It is also to be noted that the Catholic religion has made of this one command two commands and have disregarded the command "Thou shalt not make for thyself ingraven images." B. Achan sinned - I saw , I took ....Joshua 7:21. 2. Ahab -- Naboths vineyard ...I Kings 21. 3. David -- Uriah wife. 4. Judas -- the covetousness of the perfume given to wash Christ's feet. C.
