To all: Are There Two Comings Spoken Of? I have not kept up with the posts on the second coming of Christ too well, but it seems to me that the writers of the New Testament realized there was an imminent coming of Christ, which could be known, and another coming that was not known, either by the angels or Christ himself. I. Imminent Coming Passages The expression <> is found in Matt.3:2; 4:17; 10:7 and Luke 21:30,31 to refer to the imminent coming of the kingdom. The same expression is used by Christ to talk about his imminent death (Matthew 26:18,45, betrayal, Mark 14:42). Paul uses the expression in the following passage, as does Peter, to refer to the imminent coming of Christ in their life time. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand (Philip.4:5). But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer (1 Peter 4:7). When Jesus gave a message to John to be delivered to the seven churches, he himself spoke of his imminent coming, which could not have been the second one, since Jesus did not know the time of that one (Rev. 2:5; Rev. 2:16; Rev. 2:25; Rev. 3:3; Rev. 3:11; Rev. 22:7; Rev. 22:12). Even John concurred with the Lord and said, He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Rev. 22:20). II. Second Coming: Not Known That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. (2 Thes. 2:2). III. Conclusion When an inspired author writes about the imminent coming of Jesus, it cannot be his second coming because that is not known. Some of the wording used by Jesus in Matt.24; Mark 13; and Luke 21 seems to refer to the end of the world. However, it cannot since Matt.24:34 shows the apostles would still be living when those things took place. It is for this reason that I believe the book of Revelation was written early and refers to things that were going to happen in the first century (Rev.1:1,3; 22:6,10). Of course that is my opinion.
